Lyrics of the Week – Week 20

Dedicated to one of my mom’s friends. She loves Sting.

“Fields of Gold” by Sting

You’ll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You’ll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in the fields of gold

So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold

Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley
We’ll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in the fields of gold

See the west wind move like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I’ve broken
But I swear in the days still left
We’ll walk in the fields of gold
We’ll walk in the fields of gold

Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold
You’ll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in the fields of gold
When we walked in the fields of gold
When we walked in the fields of gold

Eva Cassidy’s cover of this song was the first time I heard it. I don’t have much knowledge of Sting’s version, but he deserves every lick of credit for these incredible words. Apparently he wrote this song after he bought a house near a barley field. It’s obviously about love, broken promises and determination to not break more.

I am not relating this to any relationship I’ve had, but rather, the fact that I’m leaving Memphis in a few short days. “But I swear in the days still left, we’ll walk in the fields of gold.” I’ll make the most out of my last few days in this unique city. I can’t say I love this place, but I will miss many aspects of living here. I’ve learned a lot and I think I’ve grown rapidly during this past semester. Trials proved strength in me.

Thanks to the people who walked with me, the words that led me, and the sounds that moved me.
