Lyrics of the Week – Week 19

Dedicated to my amour.

“Unforgettable” by Irving Gordon; performed by Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole.

Nat and Natalie

Unforgettable in every way.
And forever more, that’s how you’ll stay.
That’s why, darling, it’s incredible,
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too.

No never before
has someone been more, ooh…

Unforgettable, in every way.
And forever more, that’s how you’ll stay.
That’s why, darling, it’s incredible,
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too.

This song was featured on the 1991 Natalie Cole album Unforgettable. This particular song had Nat’s voice edited into his daughter’s new hit. (Nat died in 1965.) This song won Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance at the 1992 Grammy Awards.

I was driving home from class Monday when I heard this song at the very end of the Natalie Cole album. (I have always loved jazz and this was given to me by a mentor to practice the various songs of hers that I sang in high school.) I doubt I ever truly listened to this song, but yesterday it hit me very hard. A liquid film covered my eyes as I tried to make sense of my emotions.

Throughout my stay in Memphis, I’ve become helplessly enamored with someone. I’m not sure I even understand love or my feelings for that matter, and I feel it would be unfair to the person if I stated his name.

Let’s just say I remember every single detail of us. We continue to tell each other, “There’s something about you…” It’s confusing, warming, and yet, painful.

Love has been defined in countless ways that relate to various people. This ballad of love can relate to loss and love. I felt selfish after I read that it was actually Nat’s voice on the record. This little girl lost her father at age 15, and I’m complaining about moving away from someone who I can’t even explain my feelings to.

I love jazz standards because they are usually about love and are very simple to understand. Sometimes ambiguity is pointless.

  1. I love that song too. My and my special lady sung it together after reading this blog. Ya know Krista, Memphis does have some allure to it but get out of here. This doesn’t have what people like ourselves need which is opportunity.
