Lyrics of the Week – Week 6

Dedicated to all bands that choose to write their lyrics in a different language.

“Se Te Olvido” – by Kalimba

El tiempo nos desconoció
Nos apagó el corazón
Donde escondió todo ese amor?
No entiendo, oh no
Ensordecio mi respiracion
Se me escapo dentro de tu voz
Ya no avanza el reloj
No puedo, oh no

Esa noche blanca y serena

Te extraño, uh no!

Esa noche blanca y serena

English translation:

The time forgot us,
extinguished our hearts,
Where did it hide all that love?
I do not understand…
It silenced my breathing,
It escaped within your voice,
The clock no longer moves, [time no longer continues to pass]
I can’t do this.
After all the stars whereupon it shelters to you
That white and calm night that slipped between your skin, perhaps
Where did it go?

You forgot that without you I can’t breathe,
You forgot that without you the sky falls if you aren’t around,
You forgot that I feel an echo within me that can’t speak,
You forgot that without you I can’t go on,
You forgot that without you I don’t want anything
You forgot that without your love my life is slowly shutting down,
You forgot to tell me how to forget about you

Even though I swallowed the pain,
And tried to hide my love,
Despite me trying to be strong today,
I miss you

I’m getting blinded, all the colors have faded away
The sun no longer touches me,
Every heartbeat would say: I still love you!

This song is absolutely beautiful at first listen, but when the lyrics are understood, it’s exquisite. A friend once told me that a talent competition judge ridiculed a band because the lyrics were in its native language. The judge asked, “Why didn’t you just sing it in English?” I disagree with this statement. English can reach a broader audience, but many countries of different languages have their own musicians who are very popular. As Americans we rarely see a song written in a language other than English make it to the top of the charts.
